7U Mite Red | 2014

Our Mite Red program is designed for kids who will move on to play travel hockey in the future.

Players on our 7U Red team will have a complete hockey experience. Our primary goal is to create a fun and competitive environment where every player can develop their skills and a passion for the game. Our programming this season is highly focused on player development so that each player is equipped with the skills necessary to advance and excel at the next level. 

The season structure consists of:

  • 30+ games including 2-3 tournaments
  • 2-3 practices per week including advanced skill development sessions
  • Off-ice sports performance training sessions throughout the season
  • Goaltending skills clinics throughout the season
  • Team building and community service events

** Full ice mite teams will be available through the Rochester Ice Center Hockey Academy.

Coach Casey Smith

Coach Casey Smith is a Fairport native who grew up playing AAA travel hockey in Rochester, NY including the Junior B Rochester Jr. Americans. He went onto play for the Junior A Capital Districts Selects followed by DIII SUNY Plattsburgh and SUNY Geneseo  ('09).

Coach Smith has been working with our young players from the past three seasons including serving as 8U Mite head coach  in 2020-21.  He resides in Victor, NY with his wife and son.

Coach Steve Thering

Coach Steve Thering grew up playing hockey in Rochester, NY. He played for Fairport High School Varsity hockey ('99), then went on to play his college hockey at SUNY Morrisville and Buffalo State College ('03). 

After college Coach Thering began coaching youth hockey at various levels including working with our 4-8 year olds the past few seasons. He just finished his 13th season as the Pittsford High School Varsity hockey head coach where he's won six Section V titles.

Coach Thering is a technology education teacher at Pittsford Central School District and currently resides in Fairport with his wife and three children.

Q: How are teams selected?

A: All our teams conduct open tryouts and final roster selections are determined by the coaching staff and members of our Hockey Development Group.

 

Q: Where do Jr. Amerks team skate?

A: The Rochester Ice Center is our home rink, however our teams utilize Paul Louis Arena, Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex, and Genesee Valley.

 

Q: What do you mean by "player-focused" development philosophy?
A: The vast majority of our players are between the ages of 5-15 which is an exciting and important time for their overall athletic development. Our program is designed around skill development so that our players can be successful and hopefully play the game for a really long time.  Learn more about our Player Development Program.
 

Q: How often does the team practice?

A: Our travel teams practice 2-3 times per week depending upon age group and skill level. Our AAA teams have three skates per week including a dedicated advanced skill development session plus two additional team practices. Additionally all our players have off-ice training sessions at Next Level Strength and Conditioning.

 

Q: How many players are on a team?

A: Most of our travel teams have 14-20 players per team. The younger age groups typically have 14-16 while older age groups have 16-20.

 
Q: Is there specialty goaltender training?
A: Yes, we partner with Janosz School of Goaltending to host regular goalie clinics throughout the season at no additional cost to your players. Click here to see a clinic in action.
